Manley Augustus Buchanan — Big Youth — took the microphone in Kingston in the early 1970s and changed the shape of popular music. Before rap had a name, he was toasting: chanting rhythm and consciousness over the riddim.
His 1973 debut Screaming Target is a cornerstone of the deejay era and a foundational text for the sound systems, dancehalls, and street corners that followed. Across five decades and fifteen studio albums, his voice has carried Rastafari conviction, sharp social wit, and a stage presence that still stops a festival cold.
Historians trace the lineage forward from his chanting cadence into dancehall, hip-hop, and reggaeton. Fans simply call him the source. He arrives regal — dreadlocks swinging, gold at the teeth — and leaves the room transformed.
